Santiago stopover.

For all the photos go here.

After leaving home early Saturday morning for our 7:30am flight, changing planes in Sydney – only just making it, we arrived in Santiago at 10am local time on the same day. Sleep had alluded the three wee ones, with the draw of the movies winning out – and the adults were not much better.

The sun was out, and with the temps above 30 degrees, we wandered the streets taking in the sights around town, from the mothers with babes dancing class, the jacarandas in bloom and the children swimming in the fountains in one of the main squares (Plaza de Armas), to the numerous statues of conquistadors in bronze and stone.

Red eyed at a late lunch….

Cerro San Cristóbal is Santiago’s biggest green space (it is a large hill, some 300m odd high) in the centre of town and gives the best views over the city. We walked up as the funicular was broken, but it was worth it. A snowy white 14m-high statue of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción towers atop the summit. The benches at its feet on the top of the hill are the outdoor church where Pope John Paul II said mass in 1984.

Kids corner: Things we have noticed about Santiago. It is a very big city, there are lots of stray dogs that like to follow us and homeless people, there are lots of apartments, all the signs are Spanish (obviously!), it is surrounded by mountains, there are beautiful buildings and there are lots of fountains!!

classic comment from Abigail while follow a dog up the mountain. “Mum, why does that dog have plastic bags hanging from its bum?” No Abi, they are testicles!!!

Tomorrow we fly to Quito – Ecuador.
